We are thrilled to welcome John Paul Guigayoma, PhD, MPH, who joins the Northwestern University Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS) as an Assistant Research Professor in the Division of Implementation Science.
Guigayoma holds an MPH in Health and Social Behavior from UC Berkeley and earned his PhD in Behavioral and Social Health Sciences from the Brown University School of Public Health. He comes to MSS after nearly two years as a T32 postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern’s Impact Institute working with Dennis Li, PhD. He is grateful for his training at the Impact Institute and very glad to transition to a faculty role.
Guigayoma started in public health in direct services at several HIV community-based organizations in California, so his interests are in implementation science for HIV prevention and treatment. Currently, his focus is on HIV self-testing, especially on developing ways to support patients when they use these tests at home. Methodologically, he has intensive training in discrete choice experiments, which are a survey method to understand interest-holder preferences for program characteristics and are useful for designing multicomponent health programs. He is also happy to chat with anyone about any of these topics!
During his doctoral program, Guigayoma was proud to complete a NIMH-funded F31 fellowship on the implementation of home delivery for HIV self-testing, and he hopes to continue this research at Northwestern.
“I love the interdisciplinary aspect of population-level health research, and I’m happy to join a department alongside researchers with varying perspectives, including psychology, medicine, epidemiology, and public health. I’m also very excited to join a department that is leading the field both nationally and internationally in implementation science. I’ve attended several MSS programs and during my time as postdoctoral scholar and really enjoy the warm and welcoming environment of MSS,” said Guigayoma.
In his new role, he will be working on the HIV Implementation Science Coordination Initiative at the Impact Institute with Brian Mustanski, PhD, Nanette Benbow, PhD, and Dennis Li, PhD. He is very much looking forward to applying his training in public health to lead large-scale national collaborative research projects that advance the adoption of effective HIV prevention and treatment interventions across the country. Welcome John Guigayoma!
